Toronto was hit by a 5.0 Richter Scale Earthquake today that started near the Ontario-Quebec border and reportedly shook parts of upstate New York and Ohio as well as Chicago, Cleveland and Indiana.
The Geological Survey of Canada confirmed that the rattling was a magnitude 3.0 earthquake that hit at 6:22 a.m. The quake was centred six miles northwest of Oshawa. According to officials from Toronto there have been no reports on injuries or damage related to the tremors. In Ottawa, the closest city to the quake, there were no reports of damage but workers were asked to leave their offices briefly.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that a quake in the Northeastern United States "can be felt over an area as much as 10 times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the West Coast."
Karine Majeu, spokesperson for the City of Gatineau, said there have not received any news of major damage. A final report is pending.
Despite reports of broken windows, Ottawa's Rideau Centre, a downtown mall, was shaken but unscathed by the earthquake, said Cindy VanBuskirk, the centre's general manager.
"There has been absolutely no damage whatsoever," she said. "There was no interruption to our operations."
Twitter feeds say that Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto all felt the quake at the same time. The Ottawa Globe and Mail newsroom has evacuated their offices, and City Hall was also evacuated. Twitter feeds are stating that it was felt for 30 seconds in Markham and Thornhill.
CP24 reports a second earthquake was felt in the Ottawa-Gatineau area too. The epicenter is at 45.955°N, 75.546°W. That is 61 km from Ottawa, 58 km from Hull , Quebec, 52 km from Gatineau, Quebec and 49 km from Cumberland, Ontario.
And on the other side businessmen doing their business very well, While most people were trying to call their loved ones and refreshing their Web browser to figure out exactly what was going on in the past two hours, one opportunistic entrepreneur used that time to make a commemorative "I survived Toronto earthquake 2010" T-shirt.
Available on Zazzle for $18.95, this shirt, which is quickly making the rounds on Twitter, will let the world know that Torontonians survived a 5.5 magnitude quake for a whopping 30 seconds. There may not be any structural damage or lives lost, but the tremble could have shifted the computer monitor into a slightly weird angle that would take a painful five minutes to readjust. Just don't wear the shirt when visiting Chile or Haiti.
