Alstom Marine are the creators of the world's current largest cruise ship, Queen Mary II, so it's just possible they might pull this one off. And if they do, what will the implications for us all be? Talk is already afoot of paranoid billionaires escaping to an AZ Island as the world around them collapses, or worse still savvy billionaires (with huge multinational corporations) living on them as tax havens. With kick-ass nuclear defense systems, of course. Cue sinister cackling.

Futuristic cruise ship island
Tags: Futuristic cruise ship island
If you thought the Lilypad was a wild idea, check out AZ Island (Ile d'AZ). It's an artificial island with a hotel complex on it. So far, so Dubai. So what's so interesting about it? Well, how about the fact that it can move from place to place like a massive cruise ship?
Needless to say, it's still at the idea stage, waiting for someone to come along and invest two billion euros in its creation. But it's a pretty astonishing idea. Visualized by the French company Alstom Marine and Parisian architect Jean-Philippe Zoppini in 2002, it would be 400m by 300m in size, 29 floors high, and able to accommodate 10,000 passengers.
